Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most grand and symbolic traditional festival of the Chinese people with a history of thousands of years. It embodies the Chinese people’s yearning for reunion, happiness and a better future, and is a precious carrier of traditional Chinese culture. Here is a brief introduction to its core traditional customs:
I. Origin and Meaning of Chinese New Year
The origin of Chinese New Year can be traced back to the New Year sacrifice activities in ancient times. Taking the start of the lunar year as a node, the ancient people offered sacrifices to heaven, earth and ancestors, praying for favorable weather, a bumper harvest of all grains, and prosperity of humans and animals in the coming year. After thousands of years of evolution, it has formed a complete system of customs and become an important way for the Chinese people to gather emotions and inherit culture.
The core meanings of Chinese New Year are “reunion” and “a new start”. Reunion is an eternal theme – no matter where they are in the world, the Chinese people will rush back to their hometowns before the festival to reunite with their families and share warm moments. A new start stems from the change of the lunar year, symbolizing bidding farewell to the busyness and fatigue of the past year and embracing new hopes and opportunities.
II. Core Traditional Customs of Chinese New Year
The customs of Chinese New Year run through the pre-festival, festival and post-festival periods. Each custom carries good wishes and has been passed down from generation to generation.
(1) Pre-festival Customs: Ring out the Old, Ring in the New
- House Cleaning: A few days before the festival, every household will carry out a thorough general cleaning, commonly known as “Sweeping the Year”. It symbolizes sweeping away dust and bad luck, welcoming the New Year with a clean environment, and also represents letting go of the troubles of the past and preparing for a new start.
- Pasting Spring Festival Couplets and the Character “Fu”: Spring Festival couplets are antithetical verses with neat antithesis and beautiful rhythm, carrying good wishes for the New Year (such as prosperity, happiness and peace). They are pasted on both sides of the door to enhance the festive atmosphere. The character “Fu” means “blessing” and “good luck”; people often paste it upside down because the pronunciation of “upside down” (dao) in Chinese is the same as “arrive” (dao), implying “blessings arrive at the door”.
(2) Festival Customs: Celebrating the Festival Together
- Reunion Dinner: On New Year’s Eve (the last day of the lunar year), every household will gather together to enjoy a sumptuous reunion dinner. The table is filled with delicious dishes, each with a special meaning – for example, dumplings symbolize good luck and prosperity, fish symbolizes surplus year after year, and rice cakes symbolize rising higher year by year.
- Giving Red Envelopes: Elders will give red envelopes containing money to children, known as “Lucky Money”. It symbolizes the elders’ blessings for the children, wishing them healthy and happy growth in the new year.
